Oscar Scherer State Park is one of the best places to see Florida scrub-jays, as well as one of the nicest family camping parks in Florida.
The park is situated along South Creek, a blackwater stream that leads to the Intracoastal Waterway, Dryman Bay, Blackburn Bay, and Little Sarasota Bay. There are acres of sandy, scrub pinelands with miles of hiking and biking (good luck) trails.
In February, the park hosts one of my favorite local events, the Scrub Jay 5K (and 10K).
